How it works

What happens between one person writing and the other understanding

My Words sits between two people who do not share a first language. It runs in a browser, with nothing to install on either side. Every turn is translated in the context of the conversation so far, checked before it is delivered, and shown to the worker with what that check found.

One turn, end to end

A person types in their own language. Before the translation reaches the other person, it goes through the same sequence every time.

Translate in context

The turn is translated with the conversation history, the recorded facts and the domain vocabulary in scope, not as an isolated sentence.

Score the result

The translation is scored for fidelity against the source: does it carry the same meaning, the same register, the same specifics.

Revise if weak

If the score falls below threshold, My Words rewrites its own translation before the other person sees it. Nobody has to spot the problem first.

Ask if ambiguous

If the source itself cannot be confidently translated, an unfinished sentence or a term that could mean two very different things, it puts a short clarifying question back to the speaker in the speaker's own language.

The worker gets a short note beside the turn saying what the check found. Where no score exists, the space is empty. An unchecked turn is never drawn as a checked one.

What happens when it is not sure covers the two mechanisms behind that in detail.

Español / previous turn

Necesito un lugar seguro para esta noche.

English / for the worker

I need somewhere safe for tonight.

Fidelity scored against the source.

English / previous turn

Are you at risk from someone at your current address?

Español / your turn

¿Corre usted peligro por parte de alguien en su domicilio actual?

Fidelity scored. Register and the situation carried forward from the earlier turns.

Surfaces

Two ways to run a conversation

At a desk

One shared screen. The worker drives and both people read the same surface. Nothing to install, no link to send, no second device to explain. This is the fastest way to start a conversation with someone who has just walked in.

On their own device

The person joins from their own phone with a single link, and reads and replies privately in their own language. The interface itself renders in their language, not only the translations. Where the subject is sensitive, this is the difference between disclosure and silence.

A supervisor can be present in a conversation, and everyone in it is told so.

Before you use it

Read the limits as well

What My Words is for, what it is not for, and the situations where you should stop and get a qualified interpreter.
